High Voltage: Authorised Person

High Voltage course with theory and practical elements covering the skills necessary to work within the requirements of the Electricity at work regulations 1989.

Agenda

  • Introduction to high voltage distribution systems
  • High voltage switchgear, types and operation
  • Substation equipment and earthing
  • Low voltage distribution systems and equipment
  • Distribution cables, types and utilisation
  • Requirements for safe operation of high voltage systems
  • Roles and duties of the Authorised Person
  • Safe working procedures, HSG 85, JSP 375 Volume 3 or company rules
  • Practical exercises in the operation and isolation of high voltage systems
  • Completion of safety documentation, including the issue of Permits to Work and Sanctions to Test┬á
  • Introduction to protection systems
  • Maintenance of high voltage assets

Course Aims

This course will provide delegates with the knowledge required to carry out Authorised Person duties and responsibilities in order to achieve compliance with the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and implement mandatory standards (MODΓÇÖs JSP 375 Volume 3) or company electrical safety rules.

Certification

Delegates will receive an in-house certificate highlighting that they have met the assessments.

Delegates who demonstrate a higher level of competence in the course assessments will also be awarded a City and Guilds Frontline Skills Frameworks Utilities 5831 scheme unit 903 Authorised Person High Voltage certificate.
 
Delegates complete practical exercises that involve the management, application and control of documentation and will be continually assessed, both in written and practical exercises. There are opportunities to work with a wide range of equipment that will support knowledge in the field.
This is an intensive course and will include evening work, both the reading of course materials and completion of projects.
 
Delegates can bring with them any materials used by their own employer, copies of risk assessments or management systems so that they can see how their materials fit in to the context of the training.
Delegates should bring safety boots, safety glasses and waterproof clothing for outdoor practical.

Who Should Attend

This course is for experienced engineering staff with responsibility for the control, operation or maintenance of installed High Voltage systems and who may be appointed as Authorised Person (Electrical High Voltage).
