GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR) Package

This refresher course covers the five elements of GWO basic safety elements - First Aid, Fire Awareness, Manual Handling, Working at Height, and Sea Survival.

Agenda

This course aims to support delegates in renewing their GWO basic safety training by reviewing key safety principles and practical techniques used in the wind turbine industry.

Tuesday AM - Working at Height and Rescue 

On successful completion, the session aims to help delegates to: 

  • Describe relevant legislation for WAH 
  • Explain equipment selection and inspection 
  • Describe safe systems of work, permits and emergency procedures
  • Undertake self-rescue and evacuation

Wednesday AM - Manual Handling
On successful completion, the session aims to help delegates to: 
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance of carrying out work duties in a safe and sound manner in accordance with the legislative requirements of their geographic location 
  • Identify aspects of their job tasks that could increase a workerΓÇÖs risk of developing muscular/skeletal injuries 
  • Demonstrate understanding of safe practices for manual handling including the correct handling of equipment 
  • Identify signs and symptoms of injuries related to poor manual handling techniques and have knowledge of reporting methods 
  • Demonstrate a problem-solving approach to manual handling in a wind turbine environment 
  • Demonstrate manual handling risk reduction techniques

Wednesday PM - GWO Fire Awareness
On successful completion, the session aims to help delegates to: 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the development and spread of fire
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the causes of fires in wind turbines and the dangers related to this 
  • Identify any sign of a fire in a wind turbine environment 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the contingency plans in a wind turbine environment including smoke detection and emergency escape procedures 
  • Demonstrate correct actions on discovering a fire including correct operation and fire extinguishing by means of the fire-fighting equipment in a WTG

Friday - GWO First Aid
On successful completion, the session aims to help delegates to: 
  • Demonstrate understanding of the importance to carry out First Aid in a safe and sound manner in accordance with the legislative requirements of their geographic location and according to ERC and AHA guidelines 
  • Identify and explain normal function, normal signs, functions and symptoms of serious and minor injuries and illness related to the human body 
  • Demonstrate understanding and correct order of management in an emergency situation in a WTG environment 
  • Demonstrate correct use of lifesaving first aid using the primary survey A-B-C 
  • Demonstrate correct use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED) 
  • Demonstrate correct use of ordinary First Aid, the secondary survey 
  • Demonstrate correct use of first aid equipment in a first aid scenario

Course Aims

This GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR) course is designed to help delegates refresh their knowledge and skills across all five elements of basic safety training for the wind turbine industry (WTG environment), in line with the GWO's standards. 

The course covers:
  • Tuesday AM: First Aid
  • Tuesday PM: Fire Awareness 
  • Wednesday: Manual Handling and Working at Height 
  • Thursday: Sea Survival Refresher 

Certification

Delegates who successfully complete the GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR) course receive a certificate issued by the Global Wind Organisation (GWO), valid for 2 years. 

Who Should Attend

This course is aimed at delegates working in the wind energy industry who hold existing GWO certificates and need to refresh their qualification. 

Delegates must: 
  • Hold valid GWO-approved training certificates, or recognised equivalents, for each standard being refreshed and bring them to the course. 
  • Understand that GWO certificates can be renewed up to 2 months before they expire, keeping the original expiry date. If renewed earlier than this window, the new certificate will be valid for 24 months from the course completion date. 
  • Register for free on the GWO WINDA database before attending and bring your WINDA ID. 

Course requirements and guidance:
  • Some parts of this course are physically demanding, including a requirement to climb a 16m vertical ladder. 
  • Employers should ensure delegates are medically fit to attend the training.
  • Delegates will need to complete a medical declaration on arrival. 
  • The dress code for classroom sessions is usually smart/casual. Protective equipment will be provided for practical elements, including safety wellies.
