Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross Cutting & Basic Felling up to 380mm - LANTRA

LANTRA course with theory and practical training session and assessment covering felling trees up to the guide bar length (380mm).<br>

Agenda

By the end of this course, delegates will be able to: 

ΓÇó Identify the risk assessment and emergency procedures on a worksite 
ΓÇó Organise site safety and state the procedures required 
ΓÇó Assess the trees to be felled for hazards and risks 
ΓÇó Fell trees which have a diameter less than the effective cutting length of a guide bar (guide bar length not greater than 380mm/15ΓÇØ) 
ΓÇó Assess a leaning tree and the safest method of felling 
ΓÇó Make accurate felling cuts in the correct positions 
ΓÇó De-limb felled trees in a safe and methodical manner 
ΓÇó Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths 
ΓÇó Assess and explain the terms tension and compression in timber 
ΓÇó Adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar 
ΓÇó Handle and stack timber in a safe manner 
ΓÇó Assess a hung-up tree and the safest method of takedown 
ΓÇó Select and prepare equipment required for safe and effective takedown 
ΓÇó Check on the safety of takedown tools 
ΓÇó Make accurate severing cuts in the correct positions 
ΓÇó Select and use hand tools safely 
ΓÇó Take down hung-up trees to a safe and stable position 
ΓÇó State techniques which must not be used for the takedown of hung-up trees 
ΓÇó Identify the necessary personal protective equipment required, report on its condition and locate the various standard marks 
ΓÇó Identify safety and health features on a chainsaw 
ΓÇó Prepare the chainsaw for use with the correct fuel/oil mix and chain lubrication 
ΓÇó Start the chainsaw from both cold and hot in a safe manner 
ΓÇó Carry out pre-cutting safety tests and state the procedures if the chainsaw fails these tests 
ΓÇó State the possible hazards/risks when carrying out maintenance or operational tasks 
ΓÇó Organise site safety and state the procedures required 
ΓÇó Identify faults and defects on a chainsaw and cutting equipment and decide which the operator can remedy and which require a service engineerΓÇÖs attention 
ΓÇó Select and identify correct tools to enable maintenance to be carried out and report on their serviceability 
ΓÇó Carry out all routine maintenance in accordance with the manufacturerΓÇÖs instruction book and/or the Lantra Awards workbook
ΓÇó Cross-cut timber accurately to required lengths ΓÇó Assess and explain the terms ΓÇÿtensionΓÇÖ and ΓÇÿcompressionΓÇÖ in timber 
ΓÇó Adopt safe procedures to remove a trapped guide bar 
ΓÇó Handle and stack timber in a safe manner

Course Aims

The aim of this course is to provide delegates with the skills and knowledge required to safely operate and maintain a chainsaw. Delegates will also gain the knowledge on health, safety and legislative matters pertaining to felling trees, as well as various cutting techniques for dealing with felling trees up to 380mm in diameter.

Certification

Upon completion of this course, delegates will receive a LANTRA accredited certificate that does not expire. However, it is advised and is business best practice that delegates attend a refresher course every 3 years.

City & Guilds Registration can be arranged at additional cost. For the City & Guilds certificate an additional exam will need to be completed which will be arranged during the training. There will be an additional cost for this certificate.

This course is not an alternative to achieving the qualification in this area. Professional Users must achieve the Level 2 Award in Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-cutting and the Level 2 Award in Felling and Processing Trees up to 380mm.

This course will be suitable for those working in, or looking to work in any of the following industries; Agriculture, Horticulture, Woodland, Local Authorities, Conservation, Construction, Land-based. 

Please note that due to the nature of the training a minimum level of fitness will be required for specific operations. Whilst we would not want to disadvantage you as a learner, it is an essential requirement.
